Information for Transition Team

Transition point - Puhoi Rugby Field. Cross the bridge and turn right. Rugby field at the end of the car park by clubhouse. This is where the transition point usually is. However, in 2013 the event clashed with a farmers market being held in the car park by the clubhouse and we therefore had to move the transition area to the left of the bridge. In the event that this happens again, you will find laminated documentation of layout and notes from the 2013 event etc in the white tub.

Collect equipment (see list below) from scout containers at Makarau campsite either during the week or on Saturday morning. Leave the fence up until race morning. Wire has been reconnected after 2018 event with the ability to be disconnected in the future as long as it isn't modified by the council. Check this out during the week and be prepared to take wire cutters and extra wire to reconnect if necessary.

On race day a total of 8 people are required (scout parents, one needs to hold a first aid certificate) to marshal competitors on the field and for the timing plus a few outside helpers for marshaling on the road. Previous to 2015, this has been Puhoi Volunteer fire service but they weren't available in 2015 so members of the Puhoi Scout Group volunteered. (Must be adults to stop the traffic on Puhoi Road to allow competitors to turn left off Krippner Road and right onto the bridge opposite the pub). Contact for the Scouts is Angie. Time required on site is from 9:30 AM to approximately 2:00 PM. However, two members of the team are required on site from 7.00 AM (when it's a 7.30 AM race start) to provide security on kayaks and to set up gazebo/put up bunting/signs etc. If no gazebo is available you will need to use a scout tent and will probably need more helpers arriving early to help set it up. Whole team to pack up once last competitor has come through.

After 9:30 AM vehicles are not permitted to cross the bridge opposite the pub, to avoid congestion with high speed in-coming competitors on mountain bikes. It is recommended that kayaks be dropped off before this time.

During the mountain bike stage some people may sustain injuries (mainly gravel grazes) which will need cleaning and dressing at this transition. Ensure sufficient dressings and swabs and bandages are brought along. For any major accidents, call 911 and ask for an ambulance. State you are part of the RCC event.

Security is not provided for bikes after the transition is closed and so support crew should either collect or secure the bike and other gear before 1.00 PM

All competitors must wear a buoyancy vest, or life jacket under the bib and this is to be checked by the marshals. The Puhoi river is patrolled by a Safety Boat, but it is impossible to be everywhere at once. Competitors are expected to assist fellow competitors as required.

Competitors must be in the water by 1:00 PM, to complete the race. This is race start plus 5 hours so shouldn't be a problem but we must have a cut off time for the safety boat

Layout of field map below. Close up photos of layout are provided in the white tub (see equipment list below).

Child friendly site. Marshals are required to attend Health & Safety briefing and will receive the full Health & Safety document and standard forms (provided by Race Director). Report to Chief Marshall on arrival for instructions. Marshall at the bottom of Krippner Road to use a whistle to communicate with the other marshalls by the bridge when each rider is approaching the junction ( 6 riders = 6 whistle blows).

Lost Property – Competitors gear is usually collected by support crew. Please bring any lost property down to the finish line at Wenderholm. If that is not possible/or practical, please notify Race Director as soon as possible.
